Yanukovich’s group breaks up.

Those ‘white-blue’ politicians, who used to be PM-oriented, have now started looking for new allies and patrons.

Continuous intraparty debate about the principle of distribution places on the ‘regions’ party list for early parliamentary election has resulted in a complete and convincing victory of slightly updated Akhmetov’s doctrine. The new situation doesn’t bode well for Victor Yanukovich who sought to get a bunch of people obliged to him through to the Parliament. At best, the Prime Minister will be able to defend the positions he had had before the last year’s election. At worst, this defeat may result in downfall of Yanukovich’s political career. There’s, though, one more option for the head of the Cabinet. To start his own political voyage, free from Rinat Akhmetov’s ‘tutelage’.

NEGOTIATIONS HISTORY

In fact the debate over who has a higher priority for getting on Party of Regions’ list as usual bumped into the key question: who pays for all this? Victor Yanukovich, to all appearances, didn’t have a clear answer, while Akhmetov had his own solution. According to intraparty sources, Rinat Akhmetov suggested simple yet deadly for the PM (dreaming of his own bloc) scheme: those wishing to get to the VR under the colours of white and blue have to support election campaign financially. Allegedly, an average tariff was set which in the opinion of the sources, was very high. Moreover, Akhmetov supposedly promised to ‘credit’ people who didn’t have sufficient funds. Nobody, including the head of the government, was able to oppose the suggested formula. At the same time Yanukovich stashed away an option that could turn out to be a strong argument in the discussion concerning party sponsorship mechanisms. According to some reports the Minister of Fuel and Energy, Yuriy Boyko, introduced his own concept to Viktor Yanukovich and promised to finance the entire Party of Regions’ campaign in exchange for the post of the party’s campaign chief. However, rumour has it that Boyko was turned down by Yanukovich who suspected him of heading right for the PM’s position. Consequently the post of campaign chief was taken up by Akhmetov’s close associate, Borys Kolesnykov.
