Although that might more properly translate 'steaming ahead', I think it would be a more appropriate solution in this specific context.

I'm not sure your addition really contributes anything extra (and certainly hardly makes for a snappy title!) — in fact, it could even add an unwanted connotation: "Steam railways, under pressure from diesel..." ;-)

: 'head of steam' = pression, should've stopped there; 'make it go' probably does NOT mean 'décollage', but rather, simply to make it operate; Asker may well be using the layman's expression 'to make it go' in a very imprecise way for simply 'to drive'.

I don't understand. What's the problem with 'pression de décollage' = la pression nécessaire pour que le train décolle ?
