Agency est un mot très polysémique en anglais. Un seul terme passe partout ne marchera pas forcément à tous les coups. Dans notre contexte particulier, je propose libre arbitre. Dans la phrase à traduire, choice sera traduit par "libre choix" du fait du contexte.

"plus compact" est certainement en principe toujours préférable, mais quand "plus compact" finît par glisser complètement à côté, il est temps d'abandonner le principe.

Le "libre arbitre" concerne ce qui se passe dans la tête de quelqu'un, alors que dans ce texte il est question d'être capable ou non d'agir dans le monde réel/tangible.

Quel serait le lien entre "libre arbitre" et

This ST is about "management" in the real world "own FREE choices" are not worth a dime if you don't have a way to make them "real" / the capacity to act on them.

Having better ways to spend my time than reading theology, I have ever only encountered "agency" in the sense of "capacity to act" for yourself / capacity to "decide for yourself" as opposed to "doing as told", NOT as as opposed to "being led by forces outside yourself"

Je pense que le contexte de management est inexact de toute façon pour cette question, c'est plus humanities and social sciences. L'extrait de ce texte parle de l'improvisation en musique, et donc de libre arbitre.

I don't find equating "agency" with "libre arbitre" much convincing for this text.

That is more a translation for "free will".

It's a concept used in theology, and I don't think you can transplant it in a context of "management".

Agency is not so much about "free will" it's more about being in position / having the capacity to exert influence with the aim to put in practice whatever your "free will" led you to decide. i.e.

free will = your decisions are your own (which says NOTHING about trying or not to act on them)
agency = the capacity to act, do get results.

Je viens de comprendre avec le commentaire de Daryo que c'est arbitre tout seul que j'avais copié collé comme réponse, mais avec mon explication et la traduction du texte dans la discussion (que je remets ici), vous aviez compris bien entendu que c'était libre arbitre que je voulais dire.

La définition que j'ai indiquée, c'est bien celle de libre arbitre, pas d'arbitre tout seul.

Ma suggestion des traductions en théologie, c'est pour trouver plus facilement des traductions de agency, car c'est un terme très polysémique en anglais (p. ex. agency veut aussi dire agence). J'aurais pu dire en philosophie ou sciences sociales

here "agency" is used in the sense of

a person having "agency" = to be the "agent" of their own decisions, act and decide on their own as opposed to "being s.o. else's agent", i.e the matter that concerns that person being debated / decided by s.o. else.

??? I far as I understand the point is to propose a translation that works for the specific ST, not in some "context-free undefined general-purpose vacuum", so how would other possible meanings matter at all? I think this one is slightly better.
