English term

unassuageable enmity

English to French Social Sciences History
Haiti had developed into a nation... with unassuageable enmity only against the French and not against all whites.

I understand the meaning, but I'm not sure about the translation: une hostilité insurmontable?

un sentiment d'hostilité inexorable

To assuage means to appease, calm (unassuageable = unappeasable). The way I understand it, it means the people from Haiti have developped a strong feeling of hostility towards the French (this would be phrasing it more simply really...).

In French, simply translating it as "une hostilité inexorable" would be acceptable but not exactly right, as it's uncommon to just say "hostilité", especially with another adjective attached to that word. I mean, I'm sure it works but it sounds very odd to me, so I prefer using "un sentiment d'hostilité".

See for example the definition of mysoginy in French, where it also says "un sentiment d'hostilité". These two situation can be easily compared, as they both refer to a strong hate towards one "kind" if you will.
Example sentence:

La misogynie est un trait de caractère qui se manifeste par un sentiment de mépris, éventuellement d'hostilité, à l'égard des femmes.

Thank you.
neutral Daryo : "inexorable" sounds more like "unavoidable" (Impossible to stop or prevent: "the inexorable march of technology")- doesn't sound like the right nuance here.

enmity

"Enmity means intense hostility. If you're a football fanatic, you feel enmity for your opposing team.

Enmity comes from the same Latin root as enemy, and means the state of being an enemy. If you have always hated someone, you have a history of enmity with that person. Enmity is stronger than antagonism or animosity, which imply competitive feeling but don't go all the way to enemy status. ..."
