thick = épais, lourd, bouché, obtus, lourdingue...
Cela veut dire qu'il n'était déjà pas très fin au naturel, mais qu'en plus il en rajoutait, il "jouait les idiots"...

autre solution : "qui adorait en rajouter dans la lourdeur"...
