si tratta di un modo di dire ed in realtà ha molto a che vedere con il lobbying, ma con meno secondi fini. Non so se si adatta al contesto ma può essere un'idea

il senso è chiaro (advocacy è la nozione di "impegno civile per la tutela di un gruppo, spesso minoritario o discriminato") ma la traduzione, dato che il fenomeno è ancora poco evoluto in Italia, è tutta affidata alla sensibilità linguistica del singolo traduttore.

I find "civil obligation" an interesting aspect of it which is not necessarily the way it is seen or understood here in the US. Here it is more of work that supports a certain issue and makes people aware of it with the goal (or hope) to turn them in its favor ( but this is not necessarily a civil/ moral obligation). This kind of work is often done by advocacy groups (= supporting groups) who plead and pressure the other members of the society to understand the issue the way they do and, hopefully, to support it the way they do. I do agree with Raffaella on the sensibilyzing aspect of it.
