The chances are that you've already got a set of
'multimedia' speakers plugged into your
computer, and while you're on the nursery slopes
of Mount Music Making, these may very well
suffice. Alternatively, you might choose to start
out by monitoring your music through your hi-fi.
Sooner or later, though, you'll benefit from
investing in a pair of proper, musician-orientated
monitor speakers. Consumer speakers are
designed to 'flatter' the music you play through
them, but a good set of monitors will accurately
represent how your tunes actually sound. This is
crucial when you're in the final stages of
producing a track: if you mix on hi-fi or computer
speakers, you may end up with a song that's
bass-heavy or bass-light, for example.
For the sake of simplicity, our advice is to buy
a set of active monitors (also known as powered monitors).
