The so-no-koto plays an abstraction of the hichirki and ryuteki melody, but realizes it in stylized octave patterns and isolated single notes.

The biwa is a large four-string lute which similarly abstracts the main melody by playing each note of it as the highest note in a sweep across three or four of its strings at a time.
