O stress já pode ser considerado como um aspecto próprio da vida cotidiana, oriundo
das interações do indivíduo ao meio em que vive, podendo este influenciar a sua vida
negativa ou positivamente. O objetivo desse trabalho é a identificação de fontes de stress a nível individual e a medição do seu respectivo impacto em uma amostra probabilística composta por alunos do 5o semestre do curso de administração de empresas. Para tais finalidades, utilizou-se a Escala de Holmes e Rahe. Os resultados obtidos com os questionários mostraram que 52,7% do total dos respondentes obtiveram a soma dos eventos relacionados na escala, inferior a 150 pontos. Isso indica uma baixa vulnerabilidade nos indivíduos desse grupo; 30,5% dos indivíduos obtiveram pontuação no intervalo de 150 e 300; por fim, o grupo caracterizado como de alta vulnerabilidade, mais suscetível a doenças causadas pelo stress, contabilizou em 16,6% do total da amostra. O estudo mostrou que o nível de stress ainda não é elevado, embora já requeira uma atenção especial por parte da administração, da faculdade e dos alunos.
Tradução - inglês AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION ON STRESS IN ACADEMIC ENVIROMENT
ABSTRACT
Stress may already be considered an inherent aspect of everyday life, derived from the individual’s interaction with the environment they live in, which may influence their lives negatively or positively. The purpose of this study is to identify sources of stress at individual level and to measure their respective impact in a probabilistic sample comprised of students of the 5th semester of Business Administration Course. For such purposes, the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale was used. The results of the questionnaires show that 52.7% of the respondents had the sum of the events in the range of less than 150 points. This indicates a low vulnerability in individuals in that group. 30.5% of subjects scored in the range between 150 and 300; and finally, the group characterized as highly vulnerable, more susceptible to diseases caused by stress, accounted for 16.6% of the total sample. The study showed that the stress level is not high yet, although it requires special attention from the administration staff, faculty members and students.

Texto de origem - inglês In 2004 Ruben Martinez published The New Americans to accompany a television documentary about immigrants in the USA from all over the world (Palestine, Nigeria, India, Mexico) and begins by reviewing how the ‘outsider’ might be seen differently after 9/11 and the subsequent ‘war on terror’. Despite the increased nativism and the effects of the so-called Patriot Act, Martinez recognized the continued ‘pull’ of the USA and that ‘who and what is an American, has never been resolved’, since it is an ‘ongoing process’ of ‘acculturation – an adaptation, not a whole-scale transformation… somewhere in-between Old and New worlds, in between languages, mores, and tastes… The in-between space is dynamic and shifting’ (Martinez 2004: 24, 208). These comments echo the theoretical ideas of Bhabha, Hall, Gilroy and Clifford discussed throughout this section, and without being over-romanticized suggest the possibility of ‘new ethnicities’ emerging from the complex processes of cultural hybridity. However, Martinez is quick to recognize the conflict, inequality, racism and division that remains within this process and in migrants: he writes, there is a ‘mirror in which we see the best and worst of ourselves, our past and our future. They remind us over and again that there is nothing stable in our world … migrants tell us that we are, all of us, always on the move’ (ibid.: 225). In this tension, between dynamism and division, is the challenge for America’s future:
A newly emergent American identity must acknowledge and empower difference without breaking under its weight. In rethinking our complex multicultural past, we need to address issues of distortion and erasure, of shared myths and attitudes, even as they are interrogated, separately and together, by race, immigration, and ethnicity.

Ruben Martinez, following Mexicans on the migrant trail in his Crossing Over recognized that ‘they can partake in –indeed, be protagonists of – transnational or “global” culture even as they nurture the vestiges of their roots. In this context, the regional is global and vice-versa’ (Martinez 2001: 132). Here he sees a form of ‘newly emergent American identity’ where “The kids will be neither Mexican nor gringo but both, and more than both, they will be the New Americans, imbibing cultures from all over the globe’ (ibid.: 191).
