English to Italian: A Guide to Flintknapping for Archaeologists General field: Tech/Engineering
Source text - English A Guide to Flintknapping for Archaeologists
This page is a guide for archaeologists who wish to gain a better understanding of their research and excavations through the knapping of stone tools. It includes a description of the process involved in choosing both the material to knap and the tools necessary to create the desired tool, along with a description of the mental and physical stages involved in the creation of stone tools.
Benefits of Learning to Flintknap
Through a combination of research and fieldwork, many archaeologists are able to identify a variety of lithic artifacts and describe the state of the academic discourse regarding the use of these artifacts. As useful as typology may be in the categorization of a site, it does not take into account the cognitive processes involved in creating a tool.
The ability to create complex tools is one of the defining factors of the human species. By learning to create tools, it is possible to gain insight into the cognitive abilities of humans and our predecessors, ranging from Oldowan tradition to the Neolithic. This contextual knowledge allows for a more comprehensive understanding of one’s research.
Prehistoric Context
A review of the prehistoric timeline of stone tools use may benefit those who specialize in more modern cultural traditions. While reviewing the technological changes that have occurred over the last 2.5 million years, it is important to consider how these advances may have reflected or defined advanced cognitive abilities.
Oldowan
The Oldowan tradition ranges from 2.5 to 1.5 million years ago. These tools are characterized by their lack of symmetry and simple design. Generally, Oldowan tools are separated into categories according to use: choppers, pounders and scrapers. These tools required little planning and only a few strikes in order to achieve the desired result. An example of an Oldowan tool is pictured on the right.
Acheulean
The Acheulean tradition began approximately 1.5 years ago and ended around 100,000 years ago. This tradition is associated with Homo erectus and is characterized by a marked increase in symmetry and planning. These tools include hand-axes, cleavers, scrapers, choppers and the appearance of the removal of flakes from a core. An example of an Acheulean Tool is pictured on the left.
Mousterian
The Mousterian tradition ranges from 250,000 to 30,000 years ago. This tradition is generally associated with Neanderthals, though it can also be associated with early Homo sapiens in some regions. Mousterian tools are more specialized and include flaked cores with longer blades than those found in the Acheulean tradition as well as the appearance of spear heads.
Chatelperronian and Aurignacian
The Chatelperronian tradition ranges from 35,000 to 29,000 years ago, while the Aurignacian tradition is associated with the time period between 32,000 and 21,000 years ago. There is some debate regarding how far each tradition can be associated with Neanderthals or Homo sapiens. This tradition is a refinement of the mousterian techniques and an increase in long blades with retouched edges. Pictured in the figure on the right are Aurignacian tools found in a Chatelperronian-type site.
Mesolithic to Modern Times
From the Mesolithic Era to recent hunter-gatherers, a wide variety of cultural traditions have emerged associated exclusively with Homo sapiens. Tools diverged based on these traditions, but include refined blades, arrowheads and other highly specialized tools. These tools range from functional to ornate.
Things to Consider Before Beginning
It is important to note the differences in these techniques and associated pictures. With the acquisition of the skills required to flintknap, it is possible to recreate all of these techniques in order. It is useful to begin with the earliest traditions and work forward through history. Consider the level of cognition necessary for each step and how far ahead it is necessary to plan.
Note on Safety
It is a good idea to wear leather gloves and safety glasses while flintknapping. It is also advised to have a leather lap pad and hand guard. Certain materials are incredibly sharp and even small slivers of debitage can cause lasting physical harm.
Material
Tools
Methods
Materials
The availability of knappable stones varies greatly depending on local geology. One way of discovering what may be available locally is to look at the cultural traditions of indigenous hunter-gatherer groups. Unless they depended on trade networks for supplies, it is likely that the materials they used are available locally. Fortunately for those who live in geologically sparse locations, it is possible to order flintknapping supplies online (see neolithics.com). When choosing a material to knap, there are several properties of stone to consider.
Consistency
Ideal stones for flintknapping maintain consistency of molecular geometry through a large area. Any veins, imperfections, or sediments will cause a tool to fracture or break unevenly. For this reason, flints are an ideal substance. Any igneous rock (such as agate or obsidian) tends to be highly consistent.
Hardness
The hardness of a stone affects how easy or difficult it is to knap. Take, for example, two volcanic rocks, such as obsidian and agate. Obsidian is soft and therefore easy to knap. Agate is harder and therefore requires more force when striking the surface. Heat-treatment also affects the hardness of the material.
Brittleness
The brittleness of a stone affects how likely it is to shatter when manipulated. Obsidian is a very brittle stone. It can be made to be sharper than surgical steel, but the brittleness of the material makes it difficult to work with. It is glass-like and often shatters. The edges will wear out quickly as well, so tools made from obsidian require frequent retouching.
Heat-Treatment
Most stones are very difficult to work with if they are not first heat treated. The exception to this is obsidian. When purchasing materials online, make sure that they are heat treated. If the stone is not heat-treated, it will be necessary to do this on-site.
Other
Flints, agates and chalcedony are popular stones to work with due to their hardness, consistency and ease of use. Obsidian is popular for its glassy appearance, but is brittle and difficult to control during its reduction sequence. Many other stones can be used to flintknap, however they generally are of lesser quality than those mentioned above. Keep in mind that glass is a knappable material, so it is possible to make a useful tool out of an old bottle. It is a good idea to analyze local stones and attempt to test which will be more suitable for flintknapping based on the attributes described above.
Tools
The tools used in flintknapping are varied, but can be broken down by material and use. The most commonly used object is a hammer stone. Antler billets and ivory have also been used throughout history, though the use of ivory is more or less unheard of among modern flintknappers. In addition, many tools have been used for pressure flaking (meaning that the flintknapper applies pressure rather than a blowing force). Modern flintknappers generally use copper tools for this.
Hammer Stones
Hammer stones are the most commonly used and readily available material for flintknapping. A hammer stone is a rounded, hard stone. When choosing a hammer stone, it is important to note a couple of features. First, it must fit comfortably in one’s hand. This will vary based on hand size and personal preference, so it is a good idea to try grasping hammer stones of various sizes and shapes. The larger the hammer stone, the easier it is to apply large amounts of force, but it also becomes more difficult to control movement. The other important aspect to note is the striking surface. The area and shape of the striking surface will affect the accuracy of each strike.
Antler Billets/Ivory
Antler billets and ivory have the advantage of having a more uniform striking surface as well as a long handle which keeps the flintknapper’s hands far from the sharp edges being knapped. It also allows for more control of movement than bulky hammer stones. Modern flintknappers don’t use ivory, for many reasons, but antler billets are a common tool. Many flintknappers prefer antler billets over hammer stones, but it is good to keep in mind that hammer stones are sometimes more useful due to the variety of striking area sizes and shapes.
Pressure Flaking
Pressure flakers were traditionally made using antler. However, modern flintknappers prefer copper tipped pressure flakers, often with plastic handles. It is beneficial to have a pressure flaker in one’s flintknapping toolbox. Pressure flaking is ideal for completing finished edges. The small point at the end of the pressure flaker is useful for creating small flakes, and the application of pressure before flaking allows for greater accuracy.
It is beneficial to have a varied toolkit when flintknapping. When first starting out, the different capabilities won’t benefit the skills of the user as much as they would a professional. However, it is important to practice with each technique in order to understand how the development of knapping tools aided early hominids in succeeding.
Methods
Before beginning to flintknap, it is important to be prepared. This includes having all tools and materials necessary, as well as safety equipment and a first aid kit. This first aid kit should be kept close in case of injury. Safety equipment should include leather to protect the lap, either a leather strip or glove to protect the hand (especially the one holding the tool), as well as protective safety glasses to protect the eyes from debris.
Use the descriptions described in previous sections to choose the tools and materials that you would like to work with. Take into account what your final product will be used for and the aesthetic look that it will have. Consider the hardness and brittleness. In general, beginners should start with harder and less brittle materials.
There are three major steps involved in flintknapping. These are planning, choosing a face and angle, and striking the material. It is important to think of the first two steps as preliminary steps, however in reality, these three steps will be used repeatedly throughout the reduction sequence.
Planning
This is often the most important of the three steps, because it will dictate the reduction sequence that is followed and determine the success of the tool creation. It also allows the flintknapper to consider the level of cognition required to visualize the final product.
Choosing an Angle and Face
It is useful to know some basic physics principles in order to successfully predict what effect the angle and power of the strike will have on the material. If a flintknapper understands the forces that work on the tool with each strike, it is easier to achieve the desired product. Understanding the relationship between angle, face and reduction also comes with experience.
Material Reduction
Material reduction is the process of actually striking the material to create a tool. As accuracy is a major factor in successful reduction, repetition is the most useful way to improve this skill.
Planning
Choosing a Face and Angle
Material Reduction
Planning
Consider for a moment the cognitive abilities that humans possess. We are able to predict the result of numerous stages of a task, even if it is something we have never performed. This capacity for creativity and logic is of paramount importance in the ability to create tools. How much foresight does it take to create an Oldowan chopper? How much more does it take to produce an ornate bi-face? These are important things to consider while flintknapping.
Examine the Nodule for Inconsistencies
While examining the raw material which you wish to reduce into a stone tool, there are several things to note. Does it have any veins or visible inconsistencies? If so, you need to avoid these areas as much as possible. Flintknapping across irregularities will cause the tool to break when force is applied to the weak area.
Pay attention to the Initial Shape
Does the nodule have a shape reminiscent of a stone tool? If it does, use this to your advantage. Choose this shape as a starting point for the tool you would like to make. If the nodule is amorphous, use the principles in the “Choosing a Face and Angle” section to choose an area which will produce the desired starting piece.
Edge Uniformity and Thickness
Look at the side angles and thickness of your nodule. If the nodule is considerably thicker in the middle than it is on the edges, it may be necessary to split it lengthwise. A large difference in width will make impossible to produce enough force from the edges for the fractures to extend past the middle of the tool.
Likewise, if the nodule varies across the length of the side edges, plan the manner in which it can be flattened into a blade-like edge. This is done by visualizing the finished product within the nodule and considering the steps required in order to achieve it.
Planning While Knapping
During the knapping process, plans often need to change. If the tool fractures or an angle becomes too steep to work with, first decide whether or not the tool is salvageable. If so, decide on a new form and repeat the planning process. It may be that the tools final form barely resembles the initial plan.
Choosing a Face and Angle
Edge angles and striking angle play a large part in successful flintknapping. Modern flintknappers have the benefit of an educated understanding of properties of physics which are useful, especially when starting out. As a flintknapper progresses, understanding this cause and effect relationship becomes second nature.
Behavior of Force Applied to an Object
Imagine a bullet flying through a pane of glass. The hole created by this would not be flat along its edge, rather it would be cone-shaped. As the bullet hits the glass, it creates a wave of energy which moves at a slightly outward angle. This type of fracturing is called a conchoidal fracture.
Conchoidal Fractures on an Edge
When a conchoidal fracture occurs along the edge of an object, the force of the inner side of the fracture is able to move through an object. However, the force travelling through the outer edge of the object quickly reaches the edge. The energy does not simply dissipate; it moves in a wave back inward toward the center of the object, and then continues to move in waves. Depending on the amount of force applied and the striking angle, this can give the fracture a shell-like appearance seen in the figure above.
Importance of Edge Angles
It is almost impossible to create a controlled fracture if an angle is greater than ninety degrees. The force required is too great. For this reason, large angles along the edge of a surface are particularly troublesome. If an angle is less than ninety degrees, it is ideal for knapping. Part of the planning process involves avoiding the creation of a large angle during the reduction sequence.
Choosing a Striking Angle
The conchoidal fracture which occurs as a knapper is reducing a tool is important in choosing an angle in which to strike. The inner edge of the fracture ideally moves parallel to the edge of the material. If this angle is applied too far downward, the flake that breaks off is small and can create a large angle across the edge of the material. If the angle is too steep, the fracture travels inward and creates a rounded indent in the material which is difficult to repair. It can also create a fracture in the material without breaking off, which can affect further reduction.
Material Reduction
There are many aspects of material reduction that one must consider while flintknapping. This includes not only striking the material, but many other aspects as well, including posture, grip, when to switch tools and how to retouch your tool. Recall that it will be necessary to repeat the first two stages of preparation (planning and choosing a face/angle) numerous times throughout the process of material reduction.
Posture
A simple chair will work to sit in, as will any low surface. The important thing is the ability to sit with both legs facing straight out with knees bent at roughly a ninety degree angle. The right-handed flintknapper should place the leather pad on the left knee. Knees should be slightly separated to allow debris to fall through your legs onto the floor and to aid in avoiding striking your legs with a large rock.
Grip
A right-handed flintknapper should hold the material that will be reduced in the left hand with the palm facing slightly upward from the left-hand side. The fingers should be extended until they are close to the inner edge of the material. This will help catch any flakes that the knapper might want to protect from fracture in order to save for future use.
Hammer Stones
Try out a few hammer stones before moving on to antler billets. Test how each one feels and choose one which feels comfortable. While holding the hammer stone, the edge which will make contact with the nodule should be approximately across from the palm of the hand. However, with practice some people prefer the striking point of the hammer stone to be slightly closer to the thumb and slightly upward toward the fingers.
Antler Billets
Antler billets should be gripped as far down along the billet as feels comfortable. Test the distance from the nodule which feels most comfortable. Many flintknappers use a sander to adjust the shape of the striking edge. This is also useful after the edge becomes worn and has dents.
Striking the Material
Hold the nodule in the left (or non-dominant) hand and the tool in the right (or dominant) hand. Both elbows should be held away from the body so that they form slightly larger than a right angle. Keeping the right elbow in place, raise the striking tool up. The height of the arm depends on the amount of force desired. For the removal of larger flakes, raise the arm higher. For the removal of small flakes, it will only be necessary to move the wrist up and down slightly. Knowing how much force to use comes with practice.
Creating an Initial Form
Begin by removing a large flake from a nodule in order to create the base of the tool that you would like to create. This can be done by striking at the base of the object. Keep in mind that the angle of the striking platform must be less than ninety degrees. After removing the initial flake, note the thickness of the flake. If it appears thick in the middle, it is important to thin it out by removing more flakes from the base end of the tool.
Edge Reduction
After thinning out the flake, look at the edges of the piece. They will need to be straight in order to be effective weapons or tools. Any inconsistencies can be remedied by slowly flaking the edge, switching directions and angles throughout the process.
Pressure Flaking
Pressure flaking can be used to finish up edges of a larger piece or in place of flaking the edge of a smaller piece (such as an arrowhead). Press the pressure flaker against the edge where you would like to remove a small flake. In order to successfully remove a flake, it is important to remember that you must first push inward and then down. This assures that the force is applied inward rather than down toward your leg.
Retouching
Retouching is the process of resharpening the edge of a tool after it has dulled through use. A pressure flaker can be very useful for this purpose. Eventually the edge angles will become too steep and the tool will need to be discarded. However, the tool can be used and reused many times through the process of retouching.
Keep in Mind
Flintknapping can be very rewarding with some practice. As with hominid prehistory, it can go from being purely functional to an art-form. Continue honing your skills and you can go from creating choppers at the level of an australopithecine to creating ornate pieces at the skill level of a real Homo sapiens.

Dal Mesolitico all'Età Moderna
I MATERIALI
Fratture concoidi sui bordi

I am genuinely interested in helping and cooperating with other people, and I have a particular leading attitude, with a firm and strong will. Someone has called it stubburness in the past, but I prefere to call it tenacity. Moreover, I am self-assured and I can handle the stress associated wiith busy times very well. Finally, the characteristics that most distinguish me are the ones to learn very quickly and to be a hard worker. For instance, when I moved from my little town to study at university I immediately began to work in order to pay the rent, the bills and the tuition fees. Nevertheless I completed my Bachelor Degree in time and with superior grades. Working and studying at the same time isn’t easy for me, but I think it explains a lot of things about my nature, and makes clear that I am not the type of person who gives up at the first problem or gets tired easly. For these reasons I think that I could be helpful in every task you would assign me, adding something personal to the execution of the task assigned.
