Abstract
The following thesis is a final assignment toward a B.Ed. degree at the University of Akureyri.
The aim of the thesis is to draw attention to the specific needs of left handed students and the fact
that their needs are not being met within the Icelandic school system. The percentage of left-handers has ranged from 3–20% but is currently between 10–12%. At present, roughly 40,000
Icelanders are left handed, including 5000 elementary school students. The results of a survey
regarding awareness of left-handed pupils’ specific needs among students of educational studies,
confirm the need for action. When asked whether left-handed students had any specific or special
needs compared to right-handers, 30% of teaching students answered negatively. Left-handed
students encounter various obstacles daily because the educational system does not take their
specific needs into account. The school system is obliged to offer each student the best
opportunities for learning and development. School curricula should aim to ensure that every
student achieves the best academic results possible, considering the needs and experiences of each
individual. Considering that on average, 2–3 left-handed students are in each class, aspiring
teachers require better preparation to meet the needs of left-handed students. This paper provides
a detailed explanation of the factors that distinguish left-handed students from right-handers,
offering solutions that help prepare teachers to meet the needs of all students regardless of their

Ritgerð þessi er lokaverkefni mitt til fullnustu B.Ed.-gráðu
við Háskólann á Akureyri. Markmið verkefnisins er að vekja athygli á sérstöðu og sérþörfum
örvhentra nemenda og þeirri staðreynd að þeir sitja ekki við sama borð og rétthentir nemendur í
íslensku skólakerfi. Talið er að hlutfall örvhentra hafi verið á bilinu 3–20% í gegnum tíðina en er
nú 10–12%. Um 40.000 núlifandi Íslendingar eru örvhentir og þar af eru 5000 grunnskólanemar.
Könnun á viðhorfi og þekkingu kennaranema með tilliti til örvhentra nemenda sýndi að breytinga
er þörf. Spurt var hvort örvhentir nemendur hefðu einhverja sérstöðu eða sérþarfir miðað við
rétthenta og svöruðu 30% kennaranema því neitandi. Örvhentir nemendur mæta margvíslegum
hindrunum dags daglega því skipulag skólastarfsins tekur ekki tillit til þeirra sérkennis. Það er
skylda grunnskóla að sjá hverjum nemanda fyrir bestu tækifærum til náms og þroska. Skipulag
skólastarfsins á að stuðla að því að sérhver nemandi nái sem bestum árangri miðað við eigin
forsendur og á kennslan að taka tillit til þarfa og reynslu einstakra nemenda. Reikna má með 2–3
örvhentum nemendum í meðalstórum bekk og því nauðsynlegt að búa verðandi kennara betur
undir að mæta þörfum örvhentra. Í ritgerðinni er ítarlega skýrt frá þeim þáttum sem greina
örvhenta nemendur frá rétthentum og bent á gagnleg bjargráð til að mæta þörfum örvhentra
nemenda til jafns við aðra. |
