to Colombia’s capital city, Bogota.
Since ancient times, Plaza de Mercado,
or indoor market places,
have been spaces of exchange
not only of products but also
of culture and innovation.
In each Plaza de Mercado,
we’ll find grandparents
shopping with their grandchildren,
cab drivers and mechanics chatting
and snacking on enpanadas
and street vendors selling aguacates
There's a wonderful, bustling atmosphere
full of children's laughter,
colorful fruits and vegetables.
The aromas of fresh coffee and pastries
and workers unloading their merchandise.
Bogota is a city of about 8 million people
living in an urban area,
with approximately 44 of these Plaza de
Mercado spread out across the city,
each with their own vivid sense of local
cultural and historical pride.
But today, traffic worn down roads
and disorganized parking
and the lack of wastebins, green spaces
and adequate sidewalks
are isolating these marketplaces,
cyclically exacerbating issues
of pollution, accessibility and mobility
that discourage Bogota most from wanting
to live nearby and even shop here
because it feels dirty,
inconvenient and dangerous.
How can we address this host of problems
that affect Plaza de Mercado,
but that actually have a lot to
do with its surroundings?
Why not try to connect
the Plaza de Mercado
with surrounding businesses,
residents and informal workers
to revitalize
this cherished cultural hubs,
with the solutions that are as
economically, environmentally
and socially sustainable as possible?
How about an eco neighborhood or eco barrier
with the Plaza de Mercado at the heart?
And that is productive, green and inclusive.
Productive because building on
the thriving commercial diversity
of an entire district
can offer more opportunities
for earning a living and convenience.
For our design of an eco barrio
in Siete de Agosto
in Bogota’s Plaza de Mercado
district in the year 2035.
We imagine 'las colmenas,'
based on traditional Colombian
productive housing,
where residents live on the floors
above their businesses,
and these beehive complexes would
incorporate rooftop solar panels
and community gardens, taking advantage
of the vertical space
and fostering healthy, productive
practices across generations
in Siete de Agosto.
How about solar energy
lit cycling and walking paths
and parqueaderos de bolsillo,
parking garages below pocket parks
that neighbors are incentivized to curate
and maintain themselves?
And lastly, we must be inclusive
because a neighborhood should
grant equitable access to everyone,
regardless of their background,
whether for recreation
or work opportunities.
What if we design a cash for work program
usually used for disaster relief
and employ community members
to repair, maintain and build
the eco neighborhood they dream of.

working together to revitalize
as their neighborhood.
Not all cities have Plaza de Mercado,
but they do have urban centers
and local cultural hubs
that can be connected to
their surrounding communities.
For urban changemakers in Bogota
and other cities around the world,
this framework is just a toolbox of ideas
to borrow, adapt and
inspire further innovation.

Source text - English Mass shootings are incidents involving multiple victims of firearm-related violence. Definitions vary, with no single, broadly accepted definition. One definition is an act of public firearm violence—excluding gang killings, domestic violence, or terrorist acts sponsored by an organization—in which a shooter kills at least four victims. Using this definition, a 2016 study found that nearly one-third of the world's public mass shootings between 1966 and 2012 (90 of 292 incidents) occurred in the United States, In 2017 The New York Times recorded the same total of mass shootings for that span of years. A 2023 report published in JAMA covering 2014 to 2022, found there had been 4011 mass shootings in the US, most frequent around the southeastern US and Illinois. This was true for mass shootings that were crime-violence, social-violence, and domestic violence-related. The highest rate was found in the District of Columbia (10.4 shootings per one million people), followed by Louisiana (4.2 mass shootings per million) and Illinois.
Perpetrators are most commonly middle aged white males. Contributing factors include easy access to guns, perpetrator suicidality and early childhood trauma, as well as various sociocultural factors including online media reporting of mass shootings. In one study, 44% of mass shooters had leaked their plans prior to committing the act.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation designated 61 of all events in 2021 as active shooter incidents. The United States has had more mass shootings than any other country. After a shooting, perpetrators generally either die by suicide, or are restrained or killed by law enforcement officers. Mass shootings accounted for under 0.2 percent of gun deaths in the United States between 2000 and 2016, and less than 0.5 percent of all homicides in the United States from 1976 to 2018.
Definitions
There is no fixed definition of a mass shooting in the United States, and different researchers define "mass shootings" in different ways. However of the 7 following definitions most use a minimum of 4 victims as a cut off. Among the various definitions are those that are:
Based on injuries:
Gun Violence Archive: More broadly defines "mass shooting" to mean four or more (excluding the perpetrator) shot at roughly the same time and location, regardless of number of fatalities or the motive. Brady: United Against Gun Violence uses a similar definition.
Mass Shooting Tracker: Defines "mass shooting" as "an incident where four or more people are shot in a single shooting spree," including the perpetrator or police shootings of civilians around the perpetrator, and irrespective of the motive of the perpetrator or the location of the murders.
Based on number of deaths:
Investigative Assistance for Violent Crimes Act of 2012, signed into law in January 2013: Defines a "mass killing" as the killing of at least three victims, excluding the perpetrator, and regardless of the weapon used.
Everytown for Gun Safety, which tracks mass shootings based on press accounts, police records, and court papers, defines mass shooting as "any incident in which four or more people are shot and killed, excluding the shooter."
Based on number of deaths and nature of attack:
Congressional Research Service (CRS) 2015 report titled Mass Murder with Firearms: Did not define "mass shooting" but defined "public mass shooting" for the purposes of its report as "a multiple homicide incident in which four or more victims are murdered with firearms, within one event, and in one or more locations in close proximity." The CRS further states that its report "attempts to refine the relatively broad concept of mass shooting...into a narrower formulation: public mass shootings."
The appropriateness of a broad versus narrow definition of "mass shooting" has been the subject of debate. Some commentators argue in favor of a narrow definition of mass shootings that excludes the victims of street crime. Mark Follman of Mother Jones, which compiles an open-source database of mass shootings, contends that "While all the victims are important, conflating those many other crimes with indiscriminate slaughter in public venues obscures our understanding of this complicated and growing problem." Northeastern University criminologist James Alan Fox argues against the use of the broad definition of "mass shooting" in the popular press, stating that it misleads readers. Others, by contrast, argue that defining "mass shooting" solely as a shooting in a public place in which the perpetrator fires at random is too narrow. For example, Mark Hay argues that although gang, party, and domestic violence "probably warrant different solutions" than random mass public shootings, a narrow definition fails "to capture and convey the full scope of large-scale gun violence in the United States" and its effect on marginalized communities.

An air superiority fighter (also styled air-superiority fighter) is a fighter aircraft designed to seize control of enemy airspace by establishing tactical dominance (air superiority) over the opposing air force. Air-superiority fighters are primarily tasked to perform aerial combat against agile, lightly armed aircraft (most often) enemy fighters and eliminate any challenge over control of the airspace, although some (e.g. strike fighters) may have a secondary role for air-to-surface attacks.
Evolution of the term
During World War II and through the Korean War, fighters were classified by their role: heavy fighter, interceptor, escort fighter, night fighter, and so forth. With the development of guided missiles in the 1950s, design diverged between fighters optimized to fight in the beyond visual range (BVR) regime (interceptors), and fighters optimized to fight in the within visual range (WVR) regime (air-superiority fighters). In the United States, the influential proponents of BVR developed fighters with no forward-firing gun, such as the original F-4 Phantom II, as it was thought that they would never need to resort to WVR combat. These aircraft would sacrifice high maneuverability, and instead focus on other performance characteristics, as they presumably would never engage in a dogfight with enemy fighters.
The first air-superiority fighters
After lessons learned from combat experiences involving modern military air capacity, the U.S. Navy's VFAX/VFX and U.S. Air Force's F-X (Fighter Experimental) reassessed their tactical direction which resulted in the U.S. Navy's F-14 Tomcat and US Air Force's F-15 Eagle. The two designs were built to achieve air superiority and significant consideration was given during the development of both aircraft to allow them to excel at the shorter ranges of fighter combat. Both aircraft also serve as interceptors due to their high maximum speed.
By contrast, the Soviets (and the succeeding Russian Federation) developed and continue to operate separate types of aircraft, the interceptor MiG-31 and the short-range MiG-29 for air superiority, although the long-range Su-27 can combine the roles of air superiority and interceptor.
Evolution of secondary ground-attack capability
For the US Navy, the F-14 Tomcat was initially deployed solely as an air-superiority fighter, as well as fleet defense interceptor and tactical aerial reconnaissance. By contrast, the multirole F/A-18 Hornet was designed as strike fighter while having only enough of an edge to defend itself against enemy fighters if needed. While the F-14 had an undeveloped secondary ground attack capability (with a Stores Management System (SMS) that included air-to-ground options as well as rudimentary software in the AWG-9), the Navy did not want to risk it in the air-to-ground role at the time, due to its lack of proper defensive electronic countermeasures (DECM) and radar homing and warning (RHAW) for overland operations, as well as the fighter's high cost. In the 1990s, the US Navy added LANTIRN pods to its F-14s and deployed them on precision ground-attack missions.
The F-15 Eagle was envisioned originally as an air-superiority fighter and interceptor under the mantra "not a pound for air-to-ground". However, the F-15C can carry "dumb" and GPS guided bombs, such capabilities which were first used by Israeli Air Force. In fact, the basic airframe proved versatile enough to produce a very capable strike fighter, the F-15E Strike Eagle. While designed for ground attack, it retains the air-to-air lethality of the original F-15. Similarly, the F-16 Fighting Falcon was also originally designed as fighter but has since evolved into a successful all-weather multirole aircraft.
Since the 1990s, with air-superiority fighters such as the F-14 and F-15 pressed into the strike role and/or having a strike derivative, the lines between air-superiority fighters and multirole fighters has blurred somewhat. The F-22 Raptor, designed primarily as an air superiority fighter, would receive some strike capability through mission system upgrades. Similarly the MiG-29 and Su-27, despite originally designed for air superiority, have been commonly outfitted to use a range of air-to-surface armaments which would make them multirole fighters, indeed the Su-34 strike fighter has been derived from the Su-27.
With the retirement of the F-14 Tomcat, the US Navy has pressed its F/A-18 Hornet and its upsized derivative, the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, into a fleet defence fighter, despite the Hornets being originally designed as multirole strike fighters. Due to the high costs of aircraft development, the next generation of USAF air superiority platforms will be multirole with strike capabilities designed from the outset.
A possible definition of an air-superiority fighter is a fighter capable of at least Mach 2 with a range greater than 3,000km without refueling in-flight and armed with 8+ missiles, capable of engaging enemy fighters with missiles beyond the visual range and with IR missiles and gun in an agile dogfight, all in one mission.

Source text - Korean 풀과 나무는 다들 자기 나름의 꽃을 피우고 있다. 이웃을 닮으려 하지 않고 패랭이는 패랭이답게, 싸리는 싸리답게 그 자신의 삶을 꽃피우고 있다. 생명이 깃들어 있는 것은 어떤 형태로건 저마다 삶의 가장 내밀한 속뜰을, 꽃으로 피워 보이고 있다. 그래서야 그 꽃자리에 이 다음 생으로 이어질 열매를 맺는다.
우리들이 살아가는 고달프고 팍팍한 나날에 만약 꽃이 없다면 우리들의 삶은 얼마나 무미건조할 것인가. 꽃은 단순한 눈요기가 아니라 함께 살아가는 곱고 향기롭고 부드러운 우리 이웃이다. 생명의 신비와 아름다움과 조화를, 거칠고 메말라가는 우리 인간에게 끝없이 열어 보이면서 깨우쳐주는 고마운 존재다.
사람은 단순한 동물이 아니기 때문에 밥주머니를 채우는 먹이만으로 살아갈 수는 없다. 보다 나은 삶을 위해서 때로는 밥 한 그릇보다 꽃 한 송이가 더 귀하게 여겨질 수도 있다. 위장을 채우는 일과 마음에 위로를 받는 일은 어느 것도 소홀히 할 수 없는 우리들 삶의 중요한 몫이다.
그런데 이렇듯 아름답고 향기롭고 조촐한 꽃이 어떤 과시나 과소비로 전락된다면, 그것은 더 말할 것도 없이 꽃에 대한 모독이요 고문이다. 단 몇 시간을 치장하기 위해 그 많은 꽃들을 꺾어다 늘어놓는 일은 어떤 명분을 내세운다 할지라도 꽃다운 일이 못 된다. 장례식을 비롯하여 행사장에 무더기 무더기로 동원되어 시들어 가는 꽃들을 대할 때마다 탐욕스럽기까지 한 인간들에게 같은 인간으로서 실망과 거부반응을 지니지 않을 수 없다.
무고한 꽃들을 괴롭히지 말 일이다.과시와 허세와 탐욕으로 여리고 사랑스런 꽃을 짓밟지 말 일이다.
7월은 연꽃이 피는 계절, 엊그제 전주 덕진공원에 가서 연꽃을 보고 왔다. 해마다 7월 중순이면 마음먹고 덕진에 가서 한나절 연못가를 어정거리면서 연꽃과 놀다가 오는 것이 내게는 연중행사처럼 되어 있다.
장마철이라 그날은 부슬부슬 비가 내렸다. 다른 구경꾼도 없었다. 우산을 받쳐 들고 연못을 가로지른 다리 위에서 연꽃만이 지닌 신비스런 향기를 들으면서(맡는다는 표현은 좀 동물적이니까) 연잎에 구르는 빗방울을 한참 지켜보았다. 줄기차게 내리는 빗방울도 연잎에서는 겨우 좁쌀알 정도밖에 되지 않는다는 사실을 비로소 알았다.
빗방울이 연잎에 고이면 연잎은 한동안 물방울의 유동으로 함께 일렁이다가 얼마만큼 고이면 크리스털처럼 투명한 물을 미련 없이 쏟아 버리는데 그 물이 아래 연잎에 떨어지면 거기에서 또 일렁이다가 도르르 연못으로 비워 버린다.
이런 광경을 무심히 지켜보면서, 아하! 연잎은 자신이 감당할 만한 무게만을 싣고 있다가 그 이상이 되면 비워 버리는구나 하고 그 지혜에 감탄했었다. 그렇지 않고 욕심대로 받아들이면 마침내 잎이 찢기거나 줄기가 꺾이고 말 것이다. 세상사는 이치도 이와 마찬가지다. 연꽃을 제대로 보고 그 신비스런 향기를 들으려면 이슬이 걷히기 전 이른 아침이어야 한다.

Translation - English Every tree and every weed bloom in their own ways ways. Without likeness to others, they thrive in their unique colors, rainbow pinks as rainbow pinks, bushclovers as bushclovers. All that breathes life, regardless of form, produce the innermost secrets of their lives into flowers. In doing so, fruits are born where flowers used to be.
Without flowers amongst us in our weary days, our life would be dry as dust. Flowers are not just some tinsels that please our eyes, they are our neighbors who live and grow amongst us. They bring the mystic charm of life in harmony into our lives as we become drier and more cutthroat. Flowers live in our gratitude.
We, as humans, a rather complex species, need more than what we can stuff into our mouths and pockets to live. From time to time, a flower can bring us comfort that a bowl of rice simply cannot. Eating food and healing soul are both indispensable in our life.
But as we favor these pretty and humble flowers to adorn ourselves and spaces, it serves an affront and a torture to the flowers. To take the flowers from their root for a few hours of pleasantry cannot be justified on any ground in the matter of flowers. When I see the withering stacks of flowers at events like funerals, I cannot resist disappointment towards my fellow humans.
Leave the innocent flowers be. Do not step on the fragile and precious flowers in your quests of pretension and greed.
A couple days ago, I went to go see the lotus flowers at Duck Chin Park in Jeon-Ju. Every year around the middle of July, I go on a day trip to the park to enjoy the fully bloomed lotus flowers in the main pond, it has become a tradition of sorts.
It was a rainy day. The monsoon season had set in. the park was empty. With an umbrella over me, I walked about halfway over the bridge across the pond, where I listened to the mystical scent unique to the lotus flowers (as opposed to "smelling," which sounds a bit primitive) and looked at the rain drops welling on the lotus leaves. It was then when I realized even the thickening streaks of rain could only amount to grains of rice on the lotus leaf.
When rain starts to well on a leaf of a lotus flower, the leaf wobbles with the movement of the rainwater at first, before yielding to the weight of the crystal clear water, which then cascades down to the leaf below that too wobbles, until it empties the rain into the pond.
Standing there, I marveled at the wisdom of the lotus leaf: Aha! It only takes what it knows it can hold and rids itself of what it cannot. If it sought for more, the leaf would tear at the seam or splinter at the stem. Our world too works in such a way.
To truly appreciate the lotus flowers and listen to their mystic scent, it must be the dawn of the morning before the dew has gone.
