A nation's classification as developed or developing is contingent upon its economic status, specifically determined by the level of economic prosperity characterized as either high or low, based on human conceptualizations and human capital. This will have a direct impact on human livelihood. Livelihood, comprising physical and spiritual processes, has been ingrained since immemorial. Accordingly, the level of development is determined by focusing on the man's livelihood.
Robert Chambers and Gordon Conway have posited that, when livelihoods are sustainable, they can improve existing living standards and create sustainable livelihoods for the next generation. (Burnett, 2017, 2008) It varies from person to person and also together with their physical environment in focusing on individual livelihoods. In simple terms, an individual's lifestyle can be considered a daily process designed by the individual to sustain themselves. As a result, individual livelihoods vary depending on the geographical area and the current social structure. People engage in various industries as a means of supporting their livelihood. Initially, traditional industrial methods were employed, and later, with the onset of industrialization, technical industrial methods became crucial in their livelihoods.
The Industrial Revolution, initiated by the British Empire in the 18th and 19th centuries, profoundly influenced individual social and economic sectors. It has yielded both positive and negative consequences. On the positive side, during the Industrial Revolution, boundaries broke down between countries, fostering international interrelations and also mechanized the production and distribution of goods and services, bolstered the economies of powerful states, and ushered in investment zones through the widespread adoption of industrialization in different countries. Conversely, the witnessed detrimental effects, such as a surge in poverty, widening disparities between the capitalist-bourgeois class, escalating unemployment rates, and collapse of the economy attributed to inequities in income distribution have affected directly social life. Throughout history, instead of producing goods by hand, man has been using machines to manufacture new goods and create new inventions, etc., and the broad change brought about in the industrial and technical field in six decades can be introduced as the Industrial Revolution.
In the contemporary era, industrialization has become a global phenomenon, and its impact is discernible in developing countries like Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is a country that is historically known for a self-sufficient agricultural economic model, although the industrial sector was not given much attention during the colonial period, after independence in 1948, the industrial sector was formally incorporated into the economic sector of Sri Lanka. While initially, the focus was on national-level economic development, subsequent attention has shifted towards the regional development of the industrial sector within the country. Consequently, Sri Lanka is now recognized as a regionally developed nation. Accordingly, the impact of this regional industrialization on people's livelihoods is prominent. Because the people's livelihoods are directly related to every aspect of development. Therefore, the impact of regional development on individual livelihoods is expected to be studied in the research.
