The island of Krk is famous for its beautiful nature and monuments, but on top of that you can delight your taste buds and try some delicious food while you’re there. Authentic or international, traditional food with a modern twist, appetisers, main dishes, sweet, salty or sour - you name it. If you are looking for a gastronomic adventure, we will give you more than enough reasons for visiting Krk!
Šurlice, authentic must-try pasta
One of the first things you should try when in Krk is šurlice, a traditional fresh handmade pasta. The name šurlice comes from the Croatian word for trunks of the elephants, which the pasta resembles in shape. In the past, meals with šurlice were only prepared and served on special occasions like weddings and holidays.
The pasta is made out of dough coiled around a long needle or a wooden stick, which forms it in a shape similar to an elephant’s trunk. Šurlice pasta was usually prepared with a meat stew, while nowadays also with seafood and various sauces. You can find it in almost all of the restaurants across the island of Krk.
Žlahtina wine, Krk prosciutto and cheeses
Wine and cheese offer is taken to a whole new level on Krk, especially if you pair the two with the local prosciutto. Žlahtina is Croatian white grape variety from which the wine of the same name is produced. The grapes mostly grow on the island of Krk, mainly around Vrbnik. The exquisite Žlahtina white wine is a dry, clear wine with fresh aromas and balanced acidity, because of which it goes well with a lot of dishes, especially the local ones.
You can try prosciutto in many places, but the local Krk prosciutto is truly something else. In Dalmatia the prosciutto is made with skin and smoked, in Istria without the skin and dried, and Krk combines something of both in a unique way. Prosciutto is made with skin, without smoke and slowly naturally dried in the cold winter wind. This results in a tender and dried prosciutto with a rich taste everyone should try at least once!
Krk’s pristine nature is ideal for raising sheep, cows and goats on pasture grass. You can taste the benefits of natural farming in delicious cheeses all around Krk, which are usually made by local farmers following traditional recipes. While the sheep cheese is the most prominent one, cow and goat cheeses will also delight you. Whether you try them grated or sliced, along with prosciutto and wine, you will surely love their flavours!

Šurlice, domaća tjestenina koje ćete se još dugo sjećati
Nezaobilazan krčki specijalitet su šurlice, tradicionalna ručno rađena tjestenina nazvana po slonovim surlicama na koje oblikom podsjeća. Nekoć su se jela sa šurlicama spremala samo za posebne prigode kao što su vjenčanja i blagdani.
Izrađuju se tako da se tijesto namota na dugačku iglu ili drveni štapić i oblikuje sa šupljinom u sredini, baš poput surle. Šurlice su se tradicionalno posluživale s gulašom, no danas ih možete naći i u kombinaciji s plodovima mora te raznim drugim umacima, i to u gotovo svakom restoranu na otoku.
Žlahtina, krčki pršut i sirevi
Ponuda vina i sira na otoku Krku dosegla je impresivnu razinu, pogotovo u kombinaciji s krčkim pršutom. Žlahtina je autohtona sorta bijelog grožđa od koje se proizvodi istoimeno vino. Ova je loza najrasprostranjenija upravo na otoku Krku, a osobito u okolici Vrbnika. Žlahtina je kvalitetno suho bijelo vino svježe arome i uravnotežene kiselosti, zbog čega se odlično slaže s mnogim domaćim jelima.
Pršut možete probati gotovo posvuda, ali domaći krčki je ipak nešto drugačije. U Dalmaciji se pršut dimi i suši s kožom, u Istri se suši bez kože i dimljenja, a krčki je svojevrsna kombinacija ove dvije varijante. Ovdje se pršut ne dimi, sazrijeva u koži i suši se sporo na hladnoj zimskoj buri. Tako nastaje nježan i suh pršut bogatog okusa koji bi svatko trebao probati. Bar jednom!
Netaknuta priroda otoka Krka idealna je za uzgoj i ispašu ovaca, krava i koza. Blagodati prirodnog uzgoja možete okusiti u finim sirevima koje uglavnom prave lokalni proizvođači po tradicionalnoj recepturi. Ovčji sir je najzastupljeniji, ali podjednako oduševljavaju i kravlji i kozji sirevi. Bilo da ih kušate naribane ili narezane, uz pršut ili vino, vaše će nepce biti bogato nagrađeno!

The temperatures are slightly lower than in the summer, but generally the weather is still nice, particularly on the coast. Because of the mild Mediterranean climate, you will definitely be able to enjoy sunny days and probably even go for a swim.
You will also have more space, in every sense of the word. There are significantly fewer tourists than in the summer. Therefore, it is easier to find a parking space, accommodation or table at the restaurant, book a tour or take up an activity. The photography enthusiasts among you will also appreciate being able to take pictures of the landmarks or portraits without crowds in the background.
Activities and events
So many outdoor activities and sports are very pleasant in autumn. As it is kind of a moody season, you get various scenarios. If the weather leans towards the summerish one, you can enjoy water sports and sunbathing without the heatwave or large crowds. If it is not as warm, it is ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling while enjoying the beautiful nature. Should the weather be cold or rainy, there are plenty of indoor activities to try or wellness zones to relax in.
The events also follow the weather conditions, so you will find outdoor and indoor concerts, art and theatrical performances and similar gatherings, somewhere even a combination of both. Autumn events are always colourful, like the season itself. Food and wine festivals, sports events, art exhibitions and many more things. The choice is yours and there is a lot to choose from!

Se il tempo tende a essere estivo, potrete praticare sport acquatici e prendere il sole senza soffrire la calura o la folla. Se invece non fa caldissimo, diventa l’ideale per godersi escursioni o ciclismo nella splendida natura croata. Qualora il tempo fosse freddo o piovoso, ci sono molte attività al coperto da provare, come anche centri benessere in cui rilassarsi.
Anche gli eventi dipendono dalle condizioni meteorologiche, per cui si possono trovare concerti, spettacoli artistici e teatrali o altre performance sia all’aperto che al chiuso oppure in versione combinata. Le manifestazioni autunnali sono coloratissime, come la stagione stessa, da festival enogastronomici ed eventi sportivi a esposizioni d’arte e molto altro ancora – scegliete ciò che preferite!
