"'¿Te sirvo?' Beyond the words: How human translators navigate ambiguity and context"

What happens when a simple two-word phrase can mean "Would you like some soda?" or "Am I good enough for you?" This humorous cartoon published by me on LinkedIn on International Translation Day 2025 isn't just a joke—it's a perfect illustration of the daily challenge translators face: navigating ambiguity, interpreting context, and choosing the right meaning in the right moment.

In this session, Andrea shares real-world examples from her professional work and ProZ Pro Bono volunteering that demonstrate why translation is never just about words. From medical false friends that could have led to dangerous misdiagnoses, to cultural time perceptions, these cases reveal the critical role human thinking plays in preventing serious miscommunication.

Through the lens of "¿Te sirvo?" and other ambiguous phrases, this talk explores what makes human translators irreplaceable: our ability to read between the lines, understand cultural nuance, assess risk, and make professional judgments that preserve meaning across languages. Whether you're a seasoned professional or just starting your translation journey, this session will remind you that we're not word movers—we're cultural interpreters whose expertise has real-world impact.

"Holistic growth enabled by professional language service volunteering"

For translators, interpreters, and other language professionals, volunteering is far more than altruism. It's a catalyst for profound multidimensional growth. This talk will attempt to deconstruct how language service volunteering serves as a unique development platform, fostering not only academic and linguistic skill but also deep cultural intelligence, logistical expertise, and creative versatility, contributing to noble causes and conveying essential voices in spite of our own engagements, limitations, and realities. And with unlimited global reach thanks to platforms like ProZ Pro Bono.

"The uncertainty factor: Being in charge (and happy!)"

This session will discuss how to achieve a more positive experience in your work while balancing your personal life to be happy. Everything is changing in our professional world. The things we held dear are no longer valuable to the customer. Things that did not even exist a decade ago are now essential tools of the trade. You have learned about all the industry changes and how to deal with globalization. You took the marketing and name branding courses. You have dedicated a lot of time and resources to improve your professional background. And yet you feel low on motivation, uncertain in troubled times, and fearful as to your income stability. All this is affecting your quality family time and your general outlook as to the future. We will talk about some leadership techniques that you can immediately apply to your professional work environment to help you manage the ever-changing situation. But more importantly, we will learn some healthy habits that will help you learn to balance your life-work relationship and bring back the motivation.
