at least so far. 38 characters, and 9 words to translate it to Italian (dispositivo per la determinazione della quantità di flusso passante). Good thing I am charging by target word ...

is no fair: just a string of chemical names, at least the German words actually mean something.
My favorite is Eisenbahknotpunkthinundhersteller (operator of a switch for train tracks or so I think I remember from German class, long ago). Although it is not as long as those Donau captains.

So, not "made up" was Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz (63 letters).
They scratched it last year.

The beauty of it is that compound nouns in German always become one word. So in theory there is no limit to how long a word can be.
