What a strange question | Jun 25, 2016 |
Translation isn't like running a restaurant. Other family members would have to be linguists, and how often will that happen?

Freelancing is not a family business. My son is also a part-time translator, so I motivate him to do the same thing I did: proceed with your desired career and keep freelance translating as an extra. One day in the future, you can chose one of them if you wish. But there is no goodwill in it to consider it a big family business that could last for other generations! Are you kidding?

First, why would translation should be a long-term family business? Dear pollster, notice the hyphen in long-term. Second, a translation is a profession, not a trade, like baking, welding, butchering, etc., all of which might be turned into a family business. Someone's gotta go to the library. Naughty pollster.

I agree with Mario. It's such an odd question for a poll, really. Moreover, who really determines the career path of their children anymore?

plan to plan for my children. I will support them, however I can, in whatever they choose to do. At the moment one seems set on theoretical physics and the other on something related to sailing ... they are young, we'll see
