Recommendations for Document conversion? Thread poster: Marlene Blanshay

I could use some advice. I get scanned documents and I need to convert them to word, text etc, so I can translate them. Does anyone know of any good software, programs or online services? Some PDFs can be converted or saved as such, but It's those scans I need help with. Anyone who has any suggestions or recommendations? thanks

Dear Marlene, Abby FineReader is a very good OCR program, it is not free, but if you have often texts to convert, it's worthy to buy it. (you can convert 10 pages free of charge online). http://www.abbyy.com/finereader/ http://finereaderonline.com/en-us Anyway,... Thanks Rita. I am familiar with some resources but most of them are kind of limited. I need the occasional scanned PDF converted into editable documents, and there used to be one online service that was great...they charged a small fee for a certain amount of conversions. But they no longer exist. Abbyy sounds like it might be worthwhile.

If an online service is OK to you, try Wordfast Anywhere. It has a PDF conversion utility that produces pretty good results unless a document has a complex layout. | | | Erik Freitag Germany Local time: 05:23 Member (2006) Dutch to German + ... Do a forum search | Sep 19, 2015 |
You don't even need to google. I'm happy to do a simple forum search for you. Searching for nothing but "pdf" reveals a gazillion of instances of this very question, which keeps being asked on this forum again every week or so. Some kind of sticky threads would really be useful on proz. ... See more | | | Dan Lucas United Kingdom Local time: 04:23 Member (2014) Japanese to English

I gave Abby FineReader a trial a few months back, mostly because it is frequently recommended on this forum. I thought it was a decent piece of software, but that for my source language (Japanese) my existing solution, Omnipage worked slightly better. The main difference between the two - apart from Omnipage's higher accuracy with Japanese - is that Abby tries to do less and its interface is arguably more streamlined and easier for a beginner. Omnipage also has many wizards and presets that can be used, and use them I do. However, because it can also be used for heavily automated OCR with complex custom templates and the like, it can also be forbiddingly complicated once you get outside the preset paths. But it works very well. Regards Dan | | | Samuel Murray Netherlands Local time: 05:23 Member (2006) English to Afrikaans + ...

I have both Omnipage and FineReader, and they're both reasonably good if the PDF quality if reasonably good. FineReader is about twice as good as Omnipage, but they're both okay for very good quality PDFs.
