Hello,

I would like to get some guidance from the community as to how to start doing voice over.

What do I need to prepare? Microphone? Voice samples?

Could you point me to a guide that could send me in the right direction?

I will appreciate any help this community can provide.

Thanks!

Hi Victor
here's a quick and dirty translation (DeepL) from a list of things to do and to remember for starting voice over projects.

Small list to record a voice-over, recording:
What you need:

* A pleasant accentless voice
* A silent environment (it's when you want to record that you realize how much your environment is acoustically polluted)
* - Ideally, a recording booth, otherwise a place fitted out for recording (no echo/"empty" room effect)
* A (very) quiet computer, unless you record in a booth or another room
* A dedicated sound card with 48 V phantom power
* - A dedicated DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software
* - A quality microphone (condenser)
* - A headset for the return (for listening to) of the original soundtrack
* - The ability to listen to the original soundtrack and read your own text at the same time, while following the rhythm, cadence, pauses etc. of the original voice
* The ability to use the software to edit your own recording (cut out breaths and other noises, eliminate/add pauses)
* - Know the technical data for recording (16 bit, 44.1 kHz, mono or stereo, .wav or .mp3 file)
* - An operator at the controls, recording alone can be very time consuming and annoying, both during recording and during editing.
* - You must know how to stand in front of a microphone, not move or move your mouth from in front of the microphone, avoid saliva smacking, breathe before starting to speak, use your diaphragm!

Remember also to turn off your smartphone, to close all the windows, to tell the cat to go to sleep somewhere else, to tell the dog to shut up, to cover the parrot's cage.

I hope that helps.

Have you ever done it before? Jul 22, 2021

There will be a long learning curve if you don’t have any microphone performance experience. Aside from the technical details, there are also peformance-based considerations:

- correct enunciation
- ability to adjust your prosody to the type of content and audience (eg. a technical product vs. a poem vs. a child show vs. business conference promo)
- lung capacity for long and extensive speech and voice use
- content confidence; you need to sound as if you are dee

Acting skills, a network Jul 24, 2021

It seems to me that you certainly need acting skills as you need to get into character.

Having an accent, a regional one, for example, will not necessarily rule you out. It may even increase your chances if you have an accent that is being sought for a specific role.

As with any entry into a given field, it would probably help if you have a network or contact in the business. Otherwise, there are agencies specialising in this type of work.
